Healthy Homemade Hot Chocolate!

Dec 17, 2019 | Food

It’s the little things in life; like, snuggling up by the fire, on a snowy day, with a big cup of hot cocoa. That warm, rich, chocolatey goodness that lifts your spirits and feels like a warm hug in a mug.

I am all about hot chocolate in the winter, especially around the holidays! But, how do we take this classic favorite and make it HEALTHY?

I’m here to share my healthy, simple, homemade hot chocolate recipe that only requires four ingredients and about 3 minutes of your time!

Not only is this hot chocolate recipe delicious, but it is also high in protein, low in sugar, low in fat, dairy free, vegan, and good for your gut!

Did you know that cocoa powder is highly anti-inflammatory and a great source of antioxidants and minerals? YES! In fact, it was once considered the “food of the gods” by ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations. This superfood is rich in flavonoids, polyphenols, niacin, magnesium, fiber, calcium, potassium, zinc, and iron!

Collagen is the most abundant protein in our bodies and naturally as we age our collagen production begins to slow down. Collagen supports healthy skin, joint health, heart health, weight management, and gut health! Adding collagen to your smoothies, beverages, and recipes can help enhance your wellbeing. Plus, it’s perfect for my fitness lovers who are looking for an extra kick of protein.

In my opinion, cinnamon can enhance almost anything! I love cinnamon. Adding it to your hot cocoa gives it a little extra something and an added boost of anti-inflammatory, antioxidant power.

If you like your hot chocolate a little sweeter, try adding stevia drops or a little coconut sugar. Another option is to purchase a sweetened version of your alternative milk choice.

Instructions (EASY, PEASY)

  1. Steam milk
  2. Place steamed milk into a blender with cocoa, collagen, cinnamon, and sweetener (if you’re choosing to add this in).
  3. Blend to integrate all ingredients (Be mindful when taking off the lid post blend if you’re using a bullet/ single serving blender… the heat has a tendency to make things spew)
  4. Top with whipped cream, mini marshmallows, more cinnamon, or add a candy cane.

Where to buy the collagen: King Soopers, Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Amazon carry Vital Proteins Collagen Peptides.

I love this brand and have been using them for a few years now!

For those of you wondering where I bought these adorable winter/ Christmas mugs- HOMEGOODS $10 and it came with four cups!
